l had a CT Guided lung biopsy today. The nurse practitioner told me a doctor would be performing the test and l signed papers saying he could perform the test.Well, when l got to the CT room, there was no doctor. She promised that l would not feel a thing.I've had a lung biopsy before and l knew that l didn' feel anything. This time, l felt everything.l was screaming, kicking, and crying and begged her to stop. This was after l told her repeatedly that l was could feel everything and told her the meds were not working.Imagine a needle going through your back and into your lung, without any pain meds.By the way, l was supposed to be under conscious sedation. It was the worst pain I've ever been in, including childbirth.l should have listened to my gut feeling and got off the table when it took 3 nurses to put 3 EKG leads on me.It was so bad that l had rather die from cancer than to ever go through that again.By the way, they think the nurses were just giving me saline rather than the Verseed and Fentanyl.Fentanyl is 10 times stronger than morphine, supposedly, and they gave me 100 mg, which is alot, according to them.l can only assume that since the EKG leads were so difficult, then l can only imagine injecting meds was out of the question!

l wish l knew the answer! l would like to hear a nurse answer it asap! That is horrible! WHat gave them an indication that you even need a lung biopsy? Did you ask the doctor who was supposed to do it why he in fact didnt; do this procedure? l mean l think a PA might be able to do this procedure but not a NP.. not sure-

Yes, they certainly can perform a lung biopsy. A nurse practitioner has a master is degree in nursing & is highly educated. However, when u signed ur consent forms, u were told that a doctor would be performing the procedure. While a nurse practitioner is qualified, l would have asked to speak to the doctor or rescheduled for another time when he could do it himself simply the doctor is who u were expecting to see. It is like getting diet soda when u asked for regular. If it was so painful, she should have stopped immediately because it obviously was not working. l am guessing u did not receive Versed since it is not only a sedative, but also an amnesiac & u obviously remember everything about the procedure. They told u that u received 100 mg (MILLIGRAMS) of fentanyl? My drug guide that l use in the hospital says that Fentanyl should be administered at 25-100 mcg (MICROGRAMS, DIFFERENT UNIT from above!!) every 2-3 minutes as needed. 100 mcg is 0.1 mg. If they gave u 100 mg, then that means they gave u 100,000 mcg which basically means that was A LOT of Fentanyl that they supposedly gave you, so there should not have been a reason for u to feel a thing at all. If anything, l think u would have been overdosed. As for the part of the leads, l put EKG leads on people by myself when l was doing clinical rotation in high school so what you're describing sounds ridiculous. l would definitely demand . This sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

through medical school, internship and residency never knew a nurse practioner or physician assitant performing procedures of this nature on there own. they do have more training than regular nurses however there practice scope still falls under the physician they are working for. would ask alot of questions. usually an interventional radiologist, pulmonologist or cardiothoracic surgeon perform ct guided biopsy is of the lung.
