hey, im a 19 year old student who has been bitting/chewing on the right side of my tongue on occasion, maybe a few times a month, l know because l wake up at 3am and it hurts...i get a glass of water and go bak to sleep no bleeding or anything, could this be a serious problem or just due to exams/family stress?

i also wake up at least 4-5 times a week in the middle of the night, get some water and go back to sleep...could this be a habit or an indication that l might have a serious problem? thanks!

l also play football and rugby so l dont know if that could help

i've been having the same problem since l can remember.

my dentist has suggested a mouth gaurd for when l sleep, but who wants that?
i have no idea why, i'm guessing it is stress.

You probbaly are under some sort of stress and are grinding your teeth in your sleep. All it is probably, is that you grind your teeth and your tongue gets in the way. You can to almost any drugstore or even Walmart and get coverings for your teeth that will stop the grinding and waking up to a bloody mouth in the morning.

Try sleeping with your mouth piece and see if that helps.

l do not think that waking up in the middle of the night is the cause of ur problem. l think that the reason as to why u r constantly biting the side of ur tongue in ur sleep is due to stress & tiredness. Well, you're only 19-- l am quite sure that u r fine. You just need more sleep, which is why u r waking up in the middle of the night (keep a glass of water with you!). You r also losing out on some vitamins. It could be due to lack of Iron or Vitamin B. You can ask a doctor, or perhaps a pharmacist which vitamins u may be lacking. Make sure that you're diet is healthy & consistent. Eat plenty of green foods & avoid junk. Sleep at a regular time every night. When u bite the side of ur tongue, that means that u r tired and/or stressed. Follow the advice given, & ur problem should vanish in no time! ;) Thnx for the 2 points.
